What to do when someone dies

We are here to help you with all aspects of dealing with a death and arranging a funeral.

It’s nearly always a shock when someone dies, even when the death is expected. In the case of an unexpected death it is likely that the police and ambulance services will be involved and, after that, the coroner.

But most deaths are not unexpected, and it is important to remember that when someone dies there is no need to rush into hasty decisions. If at all possible call a relative, friend or neighbour and ask them to be with you so that you can talk things through.

We recommend that you spend a few minutes reading our helpsheet What To Do When Someone Dies.

Then please call us to discuss things on 01803 840779 or 01364 643522 for a chat without any obligation. We can chat over the phone and/or arrange an appointment at one of our premises or at your home.

Take your time

Before you rush into decisions about the funeral, a good place to begin is to take time to think about the person for whom you are arranging the funeral. Who were they in life? What were their qualities and values, their loves and passions? How do you think they would like to be remembered?

Perhaps you are getting a picture of an extrovert sort of person, larger than life, charismatic; or a family-based home lover; someone who loved loud music and parties; or a sensitive person, a lover of art and classical music; or a quiet, gentle sort, a nature lover; someone who devoted themselves to others; a religious person; someone spiritual, or without belief; that special, unique someone who couldn’t be anyone else.

Thinking about someone often makes thinking about their funeral clearer. The funeral can be in character, according to their values and beliefs. It can be formal or relaxed, traditional or contemporary, spiritual, religious or secular, simple or flamboyant, private or community event.

We can help you to arrange everything. We can take care of all the paperwork and arrangements, advise you and support you, step by step, on what you need to do when someone dies.
