We commissioned an 8-week pilot project to help relieve low feelings of loss.
The Heart and Soul Social Reading Group is facilitated by a trained shared reader, Sarah Hopkins. It has attracted nine people who attended sessions. They have asked for the group to continue as a positive activity where you can meet with like-minded people in a safe, supported environment.
In the friendly, weekly sessions people enjoy listening to a range of literature read aloud, and sharing spontaneous responses. Before Easter we read a classic by Katherine Mansfield called ‘Her First Ball’, poetry about childhood by Elisabeth Jennings, and ‘Tea with Birds’ a modern, urban story by Joanne Harris, writer of ‘Chocolat’. Remember the delicious film?
If and when people wish to, they also express their bereavement experience and feelings as they naturally arise, but there is no pressure and it is not the main focus of the group. The informal shared attention to quality stories and poems, illuminating the human condition in its widest sense, has provided comfort, stimulated new interest and renewed inspiration.
The next series of 8 groups starts on April 12th 2-4pm, at Heart and Soul, Riverstone, 18 Dart Mills, Buckfastleigh TQ11 0NF. As the group also hopes to alleviate tendencies to isolation, we are asking people who read this to think of others who may find this offer, beneficial. Please let them know about the Tuesday afternoon groups.
We are open to all, including family and friends of those affected by loss.
